The census is a document/record that lists families along with their age and profession. Some are more detailed than others. The latest census that has been released is the 1940 census. The 1890 census is unavailable due to it being almost completely destroyed by a fire followed by water damage. For a lot of backs, the population census starts in 1870 because slavery ended just 5 years prior. There are two slave censuses, however the slaves are rarely mentioned by name. They are listed under the slave owner's name, age and race. The Census can be very useful in finding family members or your ancestors and you an idea of where they are from or have been.
